Here is a great tip for maintaining positive respectful connection when communicating with your beloved that I share with my Conscious Couples Therapy clients in Bristol.
Whenever you feel the need to make a statement, judgement or observation about the other pre-ceed the content with the following sentence stem.
……….the story I’m telling myself about you is……….
By doing this you are owning that what you are about to say is subjectively your minds opinion and not an absolute truth and it may or may not hold value for them. This allows any information shared to hang in the space between where your partner can evaluate which tit bits of your wisdom if any fits or holds value for them rather than being forced to eat the whole meal in one go.
When used consistently by both partners you will find it possible to discuss the most incendiary opinions on topics calmly and with Grace.
