Individual Sessions in Bristol

Learn. Heal. Grow.

Conscious Couples Therapy is not only for couples.

Many of the people I work with I see individually. Some before or after a series of couples sessions, others who are not currently in a relationship at all. Whatever has brought you here, the heart of the work I offer is the same: to learn, heal and grow back into wholeness, so that the way you relate, to yourself and to others, becomes a source of joy rather than pain.

Who is this for?

I work with individuals in a number of different situations:

Those who are already doing couples work with me, or about to begin and not quite ready of the depth of couples work I offer, and would benefit from some focused one to one time to explore and understand themselves better.

Those who have recently come out of a relationship, perhaps a messy one. You may have been left, you may have been cheated on, you may have been the one who strayed, or you may simply have been single for some time and are wondering why connection feels so hard to keep, or simply to find at all.

Those who want to understand why the last relationship went the way it did, and who are ready to do the deeper inner work, so that the next relationship they choose is a conscious one, with every chance of lasting success and real satisfaction.

You do not need to be in crisis to come. Many people arrive simply knowing that something in the way they love, or in the way they protect themselves from love, is no longer serving them.

How I work

I am results focused and I work with a clear intention. I do not work in an open ended way. Together we name what you are wanting from our time, and we keep that intention in front of us throughout. I usually see individuals for a series of 3, 6 or 9 sessions, depending on the depth and breadth of the work you wish to do.

A large part of our work together is to gently uncover the unconscious false beliefs that may be holding you back from your true expression in the world. So many of us carry stories about ourselves that were written long ago, often in childhood, and that we have never paused to question. Once these beliefs are brought into the light they begin to lose their grip, and a feeling of freedom, grace and wholeness becomes possible.

I am Attachment informed and draw on a blend of approaches. The conscious communication and dialogue techniques at the heart of my couples work, alongside Emotion Focused Therapy as developed by Dr Leslie (Les) Greenberg. This combination allows us to work not only with what you think, but with what you feel, reaching the emotions beneath the surface where lasting change actually lives.

What to expect

We begin with a 20 minute discovery call, with no charge and no obligation, so that we I hear what has brought you here, answer any questions, and establish whether the work feels right for you.

From there we agree on an initial series of 3 sessions and set a clear intention for our time together. Each session is 1.5 hours, held face to face in Clifton, Bristol, from my home room in Priddy, or over Zoom if you are not local. As with my couples work, I hold a safe, equitable space of unconditional positive regard for every client, irrespective of race, religion, gender or level of ability.

Whether you are healing from the past, preparing for the future, or simply coming home to yourself, I look forward to working with you.

In their own words

“Working with Matthew individually before starting our couples sessions has been transformative for me. He helped me understand myself on a much deeper level. Who I am, why I have made certain decisions, and how my emotions, past experiences, and patterns have shaped me. He did this with no judgement at all, and always made me feel safe, supported, and able to speak honestly. He has helped me truly believe that I am good enough, that I deserve happiness, and that I can become the person I want and need to be.”

“I undertook a series of individual counselling sessions with Matthew. Whilst I was apprehensive, Matthew immediately put me at ease and through gentle but focused discussions identified underlying issues that, unbeknown to me, I had been carrying for life. As a result of Matthew’s work I am now able to constructively address the issues that have been identified, and I have no doubt that I will be able to build a better future for myself and my family. In my view Matthew is insightful, compassionate and, most importantly, solution focused.”

“I cannot recommend Matthew highly enough as a therapist. His ability to communicate with clarity, compassion, and empathy made it easy to open up and feel truly heard. What stood out most was the safe, non-judgmental space Matthew created, a space where I felt accepted and supported no matter what I was going through. His calm, grounding presence has an incredibly healing energy that makes each session feel like a sanctuary of peace and reflection.”
